documentation of running domUs in Xen with puppet

If you are running some servers with Xen, you have the problem to figure out, where an domU is running.

If you are using puppet with stored configurations you need to install only the xendomains fact, that will be soon available in facter.

With this data, I create the following graph on-the-fly - documentation done!

Postfix as backup MX with Postgrey

For keeping that stuff in my mind:

smtpd_client_restrictions = check_policy_service inet:127.0.0.1:60000
smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_mynetworks,permit_mx_backup, reject_unauth_destination
permit_mx_backup_networks = 10.0.0.0/16

Xen - error: (22, 'Invalid argument')

If you want to start an DomU with xm create foo.bar.domain and you get the following output:
error: (22, 'Invalid argument')

I have found the following two possible problems:

  • DomU kernel has got no Xen support

  • DomU kernel uses PAE; hypervisor and Dom0 kernel does not support PAE

Xen - 4gb seg fixup - Etch

If you get this "4gb seg fixup" message on tty and/or in your /var/log/messages after the reboot to the Xen Hypervisor on Etch, you should check if you installed libc6-xen on your system.

If not, install it, and reboot the system again.

Xen 3.0.2 - weird

If you get this error on starting up an domU:
Error: Device 769 (vbd) could not be connected. Backend device not found.


I have found two possible errors:

  • the disk = [ ] section is wrong ( loop file not found / LVM not found)

  • xen dom0 kernel missing loop device support (or to few possible devices [max_loop parameter])

Xen included to the kernel soon?

Today I have read on Heise.de that Xen is one step closer to go into the linux kernel.

I hope this would be soon, because I am a big fan of Xen.

Xen 3.0.2 with Debian sarge - weird

If you get an error like this:
Error: Device 0 (vif) could not be connected. Hotplug scripts not working.

You musst install hotplug with apt-get on the dom0 system.
After this installation you can start a new domU session...

Very crazy :-/
