Apache - custom logs with ServerAlias *.

If you have an catchall http virtual host like this:

<VirtualHost *:80 >
ServerName catchall.example.org
ServerAlias *.catchall.example.org
</VirtualHost>

You can log every virtual host on *. with:

LogFormat "%h - %v - %V %U" aliaseslog
CustomLog /var/log/apache2/catchall.example_aliases.log aliaseslog

An access to foo.catchall.example.org/test.html will be logged:

123.123.123.123 - catchall.example.org - foo.catchall.example.org /test.html

With the log file you can count the access:

cut -f 5 -d ' ' /var/log/apache2/catchall.example_aliases.log| sort | uniq -c | sort -n

This will tell you, the overall access to every host.

Using Apache ReWrite Rules for maintenance sites

If you plan an maintenance shutdown for your website, you can use the mod-rewrite for the maintenance forward.

ReWriteEngine On
ReWriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} !^123\.123\.123\.([0-9]+)$
ReWriteRule ^(.*)$ http://your-site.com/maintenance.html [L]

This code will forward all users except from IP block 123.123.123.0/24 to an maintenance site.

If you have got 123.123.123.0/24 you can use the site as normal, and all other users will be forwarded.

Create SSL key with CSR file for https

If you want to create an OpenSSL for https you can use this openssl.cnf file.

Than use that command to create the key:

openssl req -new -nodes -days 365 -keyout domain.tld.key -out domain.tld.csr

Now openssl asks for the Information for the SSL Key:

Country Name (2 letter code) [AU]: DE
State or Province Name (full name) [Some-State]:
Locality Name (eg, city) []:
Organization Name (eg, company) [Internet Widgits Pty Ltd]:
Organizational Unit Name (eg, section) []:
Common Name (eg, YOUR name) []:www.domain.tld
Email Address []: you@domain.tld

Now you have an key and a csr file.
