vlans + 3DM2

This morning, I had to install my 3dm2 package on an server with vlans on the local ethernet device.

I installed the packages as always, but I was not able to start 3dm2. The software failed with

(0x0C:0x0005): Failed to start listening socket

After some debuging, I have changed RemoteAccess parameter to 0. After this modification in the configuration file, I was able to start 3dm2 on the machine.

So I think 3dm2 is not able to handle ethernet devices with vlans enabled...

3Ware 3dm2 - etch kernel

If you update from sarge to etch with an running 3dm2, please make sure if you use the default etch kernel (version 2.6.18) that you have installed the newest version of 3dm2.

If you use an old 3dm2 version with the etch kernel you get the following messages in dmesg:

3w-xxxx: SCSI_IOCTL_SEND_COMMAND deprecated, please update your 3ware tools.
3w-xxxx: SCSI_IOCTL_SEND_COMMAND deprecated, please update your 3ware tools.

Now the Nameserver are correct again and points to the google nameservers, but Holder, Admin-C and Zone-C contact is wrong and Holder has changed again...

If you get this error on starting up an domU:

Error: Device 769 (vbd) could not be connected. Backend device not found.

I have found two possible errors:

the disk = [ ] section is wrong ( loop file not found / LVM not found)

xen dom0 kernel missing loop device support (or to few possible devices [max_loop parameter])

Sometimes ... I think always the online banking system from ING Diba is very crazy.

Sometimes I ask myself .. which fucking guy has that fucking software written?

I have an old TAN list. Now ING-Diba uses iTAN. But I can't do anythink with my old TAN list.

When I try to order a new iTAN list, I need an iTAN to approve the order, but I have no iTAN list

So my short tip: Don't open an account at ING diba.

Today moring I was at the filling station.

I came to the pay station, to pay my gas. The woman on the other side ask me: "Do you have an payback card?"

If your cron daemon crashes after startup.

And you get the following message in your logfiles, the /etc/cron.d directory is missing.

Create the /etc/cron.d directory and start the cron daemon!

Why you should read the kernel changelog? - You have to read it, when you use an 2.6.16 vanilla kernel on a native sarge.

When you don't have any problems with LVM (lvm2) and the kernel.

In the Kernel ChangeLog there are nice informations like this:

If you're using lvm2, for this patch to work correctly you should update to lvm2 version 2.02.01 or later and device-mapper version 1.02.02 or later.

If I had read this, I would have had no problems with LVM and kernel 2.6.16!

Note for me: Fly over kernel changelog for every new kernel!

Note to myself: mii-tool can't operate with 1Gbit/s and more.

Use ethtool, provides more informtion and has no 100Mbit/s limit.

It's in Debian, so apt-get install ethtool
